This post was originally shared on Blogger On MARCH 10, 2010. Other than fixing a couple of typos, I have left it the way it was originally written.

The man is so immersed in the book he is reading, that he barely notices when the cat jumps onto the bench. After a few minutes the cat, who has been sitting there like a statue, says “‘sup, bro?” The man turns and sees only the cat. Being a very practical person, he decides he imagined a voice speak, and goes back to reading his book. After some time, the cat says: “that was very rude.” The man turns and finds the cat staring at him with a feline scowl on its face. He blinks slowly. Twice. “Actually, you were the one that was rude”, the man says. “You don’t just walk up to a total stranger and call him rude. And as you can see, I am trying to read and you are disturbing me”. It is now the cat’s turn to blink slowly. Twice.

As the cat doesn’t respond to this, the man resumes reading his book. If however, you take a good look at him, you would notice that he has that intense concentration of someone trying hard not to be distracted and failing but still trying anyway. “Okay”, says the cat, “what don’t you stop pretending to read and talk to me instead?” The man sighs and drops his book. “People don’t talk to cats”. “But they do”, came the reply. “The most annoying ones engage in lol-cat speak.” “Okay”, the man concedes, “people don’t converse with cats”. “Why not?” the cat asks.”They just don’t. It is not what is considered normal behavior, If anybody hears me trying to converse with you, they’ll probably throw me up into a room, lock the door and drop the key down a very deep well.”

The cat thinks about this for a minute, and then asks “why did you scold me?” “Because you deserved it”, is the instant reply. To this, the cat says “maybe I did”, and they both sit there, staring into the sunset.

I caught a glimpse of something beautifully absurd through the window as a baby. I’ve been looking for it ever since. Also elif42.medium.com.
